CAPE CANAVERAL, FLA. – Sept. 26, 2006. Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne (PWR), a business unit of United Technologies (NYSE:UTX), on Monday powered into space a new Air Force satellite that will provide navigational data to military and civilian users around the globe.
The PWR RS-27A engine, providing 200,000 pounds of thrust for nearly four and one-half minutes, lifted a Boeing Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral, Fla. carrying the Air Force GPS II R-15 global positioning satellite. Early analysis of flight data indicates that the RS-27A performed as expected.
It was the 209th overall RS-27 engine system launch. There are three more scheduled launches to be powered by the PWR RS-27A this year and twelve set for next year.
“I’m extremely proud to be part of the RS-27A team,” said Elizabeth Jones, RS-27A program manager for Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne. “It’s been their dedication and energy that ensure the RS-27A is an engine our customers can rely on, every time.”
The lineage of the RS-27 family of engines goes back nearly a half-century and shares the household names from Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne’s involvement in the American space program. Among them are RL10, Atlas, Thor, J-2 and F-1 engines from the Apollo era and the RS-68 and Space Shuttle Main Engines of today.
Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, Inc., a part of Pratt & Whitney, offers a complete line of propulsion products from launch vehicles to missile defense to advanced hypersonic propulsion. These have been used in a wide variety of government and commercial applications, including the main engines for the space shuttle, Atlas and Delta launch vehicles, and high altitude defense systems.
Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines. United Technologies provides high-technology products and services to the aerospace and building industries.
