Sea Launch Departs Home Port for JCSAT-9 Mission
LONG BEACH, Calif., March 30, 2006 -- The Odyssey Launch Platform and the Sea Launch Commander departed Home Port in Long Beach, Calif., this week, in preparation for Sea Launch's second mission of the year. The Sea Launch team plans to launch the JCSAT-9 communications satellite on April 11, at the opening of a 34-minute launch window, at 4:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (23:30 GMT).
The Sea Launch vessels are on their way to the launch site in international waters of the Pacific Ocean, at 154 degrees West Longitude, south of Hawaii. Upon arrival, the launch team will initiate a 72-hour countdown, ballasting the Launch Platform 65 feet, to launch depth, and performing final tests on the launch system and the spacecraft. A Zenit-3SL vehicle will lift the 4401 kg (9,703 lbs) spacecraft, to geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) on its way to a final orbital position of 132 degrees East Longitude.
Built by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems, JCSAT-9 is a high-power hybrid A2100AX spacecraft that carries C-band, Ku-band and S-band transponders. It is planned for a minimum design life of 12 years on orbit. This is Sea Launch's second mission for JSAT and also the second mission with a Lockheed Martin spacecraft.
