13 Sep 2005 | Ref. 192/2005
BAE Systems is part of the multi-national team “Alliance Shield” that is competing to work with NATO to evolve its existing Theatre Missile Defence capability. Alliance Shield is engaged with NATO to understand the capabilities, skills and technologies it requires to deliver this Missile Defence programme. The programme has been established to join NATO missile defence sstems and improve its capability to protect member countries against the ballistic missile threat. Alliance Shield has experience in the design, development and integration of missile defence systems and continued support of those systems after they are fielded.
“Alliance Shield” is led by Boeing Missile Defense Systems with other team members including BAE Systems in the UK, Lockheed Martin of the U.S.; Teledyne Brown Engineering, Inc., of the U.S.; Havelsan of Turkey; Finmeccanica of Italy; MDBA Limited of the U.K.; MBDA France SA of France; MBDA Italia SPA of Italy; and Prezemyslowy Instytut Telekomunikacji (PIT) of Poland.
In March 2005 the North Atlantic Council approved NATO’s new Active Layered Theatre Ballistic Missile Defence (ALTBMD) programme aimed at providing protection against the threat of ballistic mssiles to soldiers deployed on NATO missions. With approval of that charter a new NATO ALTBMD Program Office was formed to finance and purchase the NATO TMD system. The contract is expected to be awarded to an industry team in 2006.
"BAE Systems is committed to working closely with our Alliance Shield partners from across the NATO communities to understand and deliver the needs and expectations of our NATO Customer. said Clive Richardson, Managing Director BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies (Insyte). “We believe that the Alliance Shield partners bring a wealth of experience along with the tools, techniques and approaches required to support our customer through life. This includes defining initial requirements through to delivering a deployable capability. We look forward to demonstrating how Alliance Shield can provide a world class solution to address the customer need."
As a long-established major Systems Engineering company BAE Systems has extensive experience in land, sea and air domains, ranging from design and manufacture of equipment and sub-assemblies through to the integration, introduction to service and infrastructure support of major system of systems programmes. The Company has partnered successfully with prime contractors across Europe and the US and has a wide range of partnering agreements in place on programmes including Missile Defence.
BAE Systems UK will combine its Systems Integration capability with its state of the art Synthetic Environments to deliver Battlespace Integration for NATO SE&I/ITB concept exploration, experimentation, system specification, risk reduction, systems integration, operational deployment and the support phases of this NATO contract. The capability offered into the Alliance Shield team will enable connectivity of synthetic environments to address the right solutions for the NATO community.
Now, as we move towards the vision of Network Centric Warfare, BAE Systems is working hard to create the environment, both technical and commercial, in which governments and industry partners can collaborate to unlock the potential capability of legacy, current and future systems
