RUSSIAN AND US SERVICEMEN JOINTLY PRACTICE IN MISSILE DEFENSE

RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, April 18 (RIA Novosti) - Russian and American servicemen are participating in a missile defense exercise.

"75 servicemen from the US Defense Department are visiting Russia. The fourth stage of Theatre Missile Defense exercises is organized on the basis of Russian Defense Ministry's Research Institute No. 4. This is a key direction of our cooperation with NATO," Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov reported at the president's meeting with government ministers.

The exercise involves computer-simulated training in repelling missile attacks from potentially dangerous directions, Ivanov said. He also mentioned that the sixth stage of the exercises would be carried out in the USA next April.

Reporting on combat training in the armed forcers, the Minister mentioned two major naval exercises completed last week. In the Barents Sea the Northern Fleet conducted artillery range practice, missile and torpedo launches and mine laying, Ivanov said. 15 surface ships, 5 submarines, land-based air units and four thousand seamen took part in the exercise.

"The exercise showed a high level of combat readiness," Ivanov pointed out. Another exercise, of a larger scale, is scheduled for the second half of the year, the Minister reported.

The Black Sea Fleet conducted an exercise in the Black Sea, involving the Fleet's 41st brigade and air units, the Minister said.
