RUSSIA WANTS TO MAKE RUSSIAN-US MISSILE DEFENSE EXERCISES ROUTINE

RIA Novosti

YAROSLAVL, April 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is going to keep on conducting combined Russian-US theater missile defense (BMD) exercises, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said at a news conference in the city of Yaroslavl.

"Such exercises will continue to be conducted, including computer-simulated ones," the minister said in response to the question about a combined Russian-US theater missile defense command-post exercise (CPX) slated for April 12-23 in Moscow.

As was earlier reported by the Defense Ministry's spokesman, the current exercise is aimed at "developing techniques to coordinate operations of non-strategic air defense/missile defense units in providing missile defense coverage of a third country during a coalition operation under the aegis of an international organization."

Ivanov emphasized that Russia had cooperated in the theater missile defense field with many countries, including NATO members, for years.

"Our cooperation is aimed at setting up an efficient theater missile defense in so-called Greater Europe to cover all strategic installations," he said.

Ivanov also noted that no country could develop such a system on its own.

"For this reason, NATO leaders decided to cooperate [in this field], including cooperation with Russia because we have advanced missile defense systems, including related armaments," he said.
