BAE SYSTEMS Awarded Contract To Enhance The Australian Defence Force's Satellite Communications Capability

17 Dec 2004

BAE Systems Australia has signed a contract worth A$14.5m to further enhance the Australian Defence Forces mobile military communications capability.

Under the contract BAE Systems Australia will provide the Australian Defence Force with 26 high bandwidth satellite Compact Transmit and Receive Terminals (CTRS).

The contract, which was awarded by the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) Electronic Weapon and Systems Division, is part of the continuing roll out of JP2008, the satellite based tactical communications system program.

The satellite communications system will incorporate some of the latest technology available, which has been developed and militarised for Defence.

The terminals, which were designed by the Commonwealth, consist of a satellite dish and associated communications equipment that are light weight and can be transported in a land rover for rapid deployment in the theatre of operation.

BAE Systems will build the terminals at their Edinburgh Parks facility in South Australia. They will also provide through-life support to the system.

Andrew Makin, Director of Information Architectures at BAE Systems Australia said, We are delighted with the news. JP2008 is a critical program for the Australian Defence Force and fundamental for transitioning military communications into the Network Centric Environment.

Building to a Commonwealth design is a relatively new approach and we have worked closely with them to establish a common understanding of the design and resolve issues. This approach has been very effective and we feel confident that it will provide the foundation for solid contract performance that will delight our Customer.
