EU seeks Morocco`s participation in its Galileo satellite navigation system
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Brussels, Dec 7, IRNA -- The European Commission, the EU`s executive, Tuesday proposed to start talks for a cooperation agreement with Morocco on the development of Galileo, a European civil satellite navigation system. The Commission will start discussions with Morocco as soon as the EU Council of Ministers has approved the proposal. "Such an agreement will enable Galileo to become established in the western Mediterranean and West Africa," said Jacques Barrot, commission vice president with responsibility for transport. In October, Morocco announced its interest in opening talks with the EU on the Galileo project. According to the Commission, international cooperation in the Galileo Program is expanding rapidly. Agreements have already been signed with China and Israel and discussions are underway with India, Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and Australia. The world market for satellite radio-navigation, which involves some three billion receivers is likely to be worth about 250 billion euro from 2010. Galileo is Europe`s satellite radio-navigation program. At the moment, this technology, which has proved highly profitable, is only available through the United States` GPS or Russia`s Glonass system, which were primarily developed and funded for military purposes. The Galileo program will be administered and controlled by civilian authorities. NK/2322/1432
