New US jamming system endangers Russian telecom sats - expert

Moscow, Oct 5, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- New US system of active jamming of satellite communications poses a serious danger for the Russian satellite orbital grouping, in particular telecommunications and navigation, Dr Ivan Mescheryakov, the vice president of the Russian Academy of Cosmonautics, told Itar-Tass Tuesday. "The Americans know pretty well the positioning of our probes in the orbit relative to the Earth as well as the transmission frequencies," Dr Mescheryakov said. "The commissioning of that system will allow the US Air Force to intervene with our system of troops coordination and control," he indicated. Dr Mescheryakov believes the US spearheads its efforts at the Russian system of satellite telecommunications and navigation. The technical principle behind satellite jamming is to transmit a power signal consisting of the so-called `white noise` at a particular frequency, which confuses a satellite. Experts indicate that once the target probe gets overloaded with that noise, it loses the capability of telling the difference between the dummy signals and the correct signals. They also indicate that targeting a satellite this way is simple enough, as the positions of all the space vehicles are listed and known internationally. "The Russian navigation system GLONASS and the American GPS operate at the same orbits and frequencies, but we know fairly well that the GPS may change over to other frequencies at any time, while our satellites will remain defenseless," Dr Mescheryakov said. The US Air Force said a few days ago it was commissioning the system of active jamming of telecommunications satellites of the potential enemy. The new method relies on signal transmissions from ground-based radars. /2322/1432
