Australia may contribute money to US missile defense system, FM

PLA Daily 2004-01-15

CANBERRA, Jan. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The Australian government said Wednesday that it may make financial contribution to the US missile defense system.

Local radio reports quoted Federal Treasurer Peter Costello as saying that Australia has not yet committed any resources to the missile defense program but is interested in discussing some involvement.

"If we judge that the program is workable and that Australia can make a contribution, then we would sit and we would look at itin financial terms, but that's a long way down the track, this hasn'tbeen developed," he said.

Australia announced its participation in Washington's missile defense system on Dec. 4 and is negotiating a memorandum of understanding with the United States on Australia's involvement inthe program.
