Japan intends to spend about dlrs 9 bln on ISS -- Kyodo

IRNA

Tokyo, Sept 7, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- Japan intends to spend an
aggregate of more than 1,000,000 million yen (about 9,000 million US
dollars) on the construction and functioning of the International
Space Station (ISS), the Kyodo Tsushin news agency reported referring
to Japanese government sources.
Until now, Tokyo has already invested about dlrs 4,700 million in
the ISS project. By 2008, when the ISS is to be put into operation,
Japan will allocate additionally another dlrs 850 million.
After the ISS construction is completed, the Japanese government
is planning to spend within a decade more than dlrs 3,300 million on
its operation. Thus, Japan`s estimated expenditure that has been made
public will be much more than was expected earlier.
The construction of the living module Kibo (hope) became the main
Japanese project within the ISS framework.
The module is to be deployed in orbit in 2006.
More than dlrs 500,000 million are required every year for the
needs of the module. Earlier this year, a special consultative group
to the government recommended cutting down spending on the module by
one-third and shift spending to private business, at least partially,
in the course of three years.
The ISS assembly in orbit began in 1998. The ISS construction
project involves 16 countries, including Russia.
