Japan intends to spend about dlrs 9 bln on ISS -- Kyodo

Tokyo, Sept 7, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- Japan intends to spend an aggregate of more than 1,000,000 million yen (about 9,000 million US dollars) on the construction and functioning of the International Space Station (ISS), the Kyodo Tsushin news agency reported referring to Japanese government sources. Until now, Tokyo has already invested about dlrs 4,700 million in the ISS project. By 2008, when the ISS is to be put into operation, Japan will allocate additionally another dlrs 850 million. After the ISS construction is completed, the Japanese government is planning to spend within a decade more than dlrs 3,300 million on its operation. Thus, Japan`s estimated expenditure that has been made public will be much more than was expected earlier. The construction of the living module Kibo (hope) became the main Japanese project within the ISS framework. The module is to be deployed in orbit in 2006. More than dlrs 500,000 million are required every year for the needs of the module. Earlier this year, a special consultative group to the government recommended cutting down spending on the module by one-third and shift spending to private business, at least partially, in the course of three years. The ISS assembly in orbit began in 1998. The ISS construction project involves 16 countries, including Russia. /AH/210 End
