PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - General Lance W. Lord, commander, Air Force Space Command, recently discussed the important role space is playing in current operations-including Operation Iraqi Freedom.
During the Space Foundation's 19th annual National Space Symposium, held in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 7-10, Lord summed up the contributions of space and intercontinental ballistic missile operations in two words: asymmetric advantage.
"We don't just have more satellites than the enemy, or faster communications. and we aren't the only ones with access to the global navigation and timing capabilities provided by Global Positioning Systems," said Lord. "The advantage we provide is more than numbers, it's more than simply the individual capabilities any one system provides."
"Today, Air Force Space Command plays a key role in the full spectrum of military operations, including Homeland Defense. The asymmetric advantage our space and ICBM forces bring to the fight today are staggering but just imagine the asymmetric advantage we'll have in the future." said Lord.
