TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 25, 2003 -- Boeing Electron Dynamic Devices, Inc. (EDD), a business unit of The Boeing Company (NYSE: BA), has completed the development of a lightweight, high efficiency, C-Band traveling wave tube (TWT) for satellite downlink applications. Designated as model 8555Hx, this TWT is fully space qualified and boasts up to 71% overall efficiency.
"This enhanced product offers our customers high efficiency C-band performance for advanced communications payloads," said Chris Stephens, general manager of EDD. "We've successfully integrated state-of-the-art technology with the reliability and heritage of our proven designs."
The TWT design incorporates technology that has been proven in-orbit and is known to be highly reliable. The 8555Hx TWT is an evolutionary design that extends and enhances EDD's C-band TWT offerings. With more than 3,000 units delivered for more than 100 different spacecraft, the EDD family of space qualified C-Band TWTs is the most extensively used and proven in the industry.
The new 8555Hx TWT is capable of covering the full 800 MHz extended C-Band frequency range with state-of-the-art performance. Designed to operate at saturated RF output power levels from 25 to 80 watts with minimal adjustment, the TWT is optimized for best performance in the popular 45 to 65W power range. The 8555Hx features dual-anode electron guns utilizing long-life "M-type" dispenser cathodes, high efficiency tapered profile slow-wave circuits and four-stage high purity isotropic graphite electrode collectors to produce high conversion efficiency with low distortion in a compact, lightweight package.
Electron Dynamic Devices is a world leader in the design and manufacture of microwave, traveling wave-tube amplifiers, and ion thrusters for commercial and military applications. EDD is a unit of The Boeing Company.
