Oct 23, 2001
ATK (NYSE: ATK) (Alliant Techsystems) said rocket motors manufactured by its Aerospace Group helped launch a Boeing Delta II expendable launch vehicle carrying an earth imaging satellite from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. on Oct. 18.
Three GEM-40 solid propellant strap-on motors built by ATK Thiokol Propulsion Company, Promontory, Utah, provided additional boost to the first stage of the Delta II launch vehicle, which placed the DigitalGlobe QuickBird satellite into a sun synchronous orbit.

Scheduled to be operational by early 2002, QuickBird will become the highest resolution commercial imaging satellite in the world, offering identification of image details of 2-foot panchromatic spatial resolution. Applications of the satellite include mapping, urban planning, agricultural monitoring, environmental impact assessment, and disaster assessment and response.
The GEM-40 boosters are manufactured at ATK Thiokol Propulsion Company's facility in Magna, Utah.
