SPACE SHUTTLE TO DELIVER THIRD CREW TO LIVE ABOARD INTERNATION SPACE STATION

NEW ORLEANS, LA., August 8th, 2001 -- Space Shuttle Discovery is on the pad, ready for liftoff to the International Space Station. The scheduled launch time is 4:38 p.m. (Central Time) Thursday, August 9.

The fifth shuttle flight of the year, STS-105 is a crew rotation mission. Discovery will deposit the Expedition 3 crew – Commander Frank Culbertson and Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Tyurin and Vladimir Dezhurov – on the space station, and bring home the Expedition 2 crew – Commander Yury Usachev, Susan Helms and Jim Voss – who have been living on the station the past five months.

Powering the shuttle into space will be the Lockheed Martin-built Super Lightweight Tank that carries the liquid propellants used in the orbiter’s three main engines and is assembled at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans.

At the space station, Discovery’s crew will also unload scientific experiments and supplies from Leonardo, the Italian-built reusable cargo module.

The launch will also be broadcast live on WLAE-TV, Channel 32 in New Orleans. NASA Television will carry the launch on GE-2, Transponder 9C at 85 degrees west longitude, vertical polarization, with a frequency of 3880 Mhz, and audio of 6.8 Mhz.
