
HYBRID SOUNDING ROCKET SYSTEM TO BE TESTED AT STENNIS SPACE CENTER
NEW ORLEANS, LA., July 23rd, 2001 -- Lockheed Martin Space Systems – Michoud Operations will conduct the final ground test firing of a hybrid rocket motor that will increase safety and reliability and reduce environmental hazards at 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 24 at the NASA Stennis Space Center.
When the test is successfully completed, all components of the Hybrid Sounding Rocket system will be flight qualified and ready for the inaugural flight demonstration from the NASA Wallops Island Facility in Virginia this fall.
Michoud Operations has a Space Act Agreement with NASA to develop, test and launch a Hybrid Sounding Rocket. A hybrid propulsion system consists of a solid fuel and a separate oxidizer source.
In researching hybrids for the past eight years, Michoud Operations has tested over 600 hybrid motors. Other hybrid propulsion applications include small launch vehicles, high fidelity targets and launch boosters.
