VOICED AT:

INTRO: The Pentagon is preparing for its first major missile defense test in over a year late Saturday (eds: sometime between 10pm and 2am EDT). V-O-A Pentagon Correspondent Alex Belida reports the Air Force general in charge of the missile defense development program says he is quietly confident.

TEXT: Lieutenant General Ronald Kadish believes Saturday's test has a better than fifty-fifty chance of seeing a successful missile intercept over the Pacific.

But General Kadish tells reporters even if it fails, defense researchers will still learn a great deal.

///KADISH ACTUALITY///

This is one test in a series of tests and if it's successful, we'll gain confidence and if it fails, we will learn a lot.

///END ACTUALITY///

The 100-million dollar test will see a so-called "kill vehicle" interceptor launched from Kwajalein atoll at a ballistic missile launched from California.

Two of three previous intercept tests failed. (Signed)
