ATK Receives U.S. Navy Excellence Award for Work on Standard Missile Third-Stage Motor

May 25, 2001

ATK (Alliant Techsystems) (NYSE: ATK) said ATK Missile Products Company received an Excellence Award from the U.S. Navy for its outstanding contributions to the service's STANDARD Missile Program in a ceremony held yesterday at the company's Elkton Operations facility in Elkton, Md.

Elkton Operations developed the Third-Stage Rocket Motor (TSRM) for the STANDARD Missile-3 (SM-3).

The SM-3 and the AEGIS Weapon System comprise the Navy Theater Wide ballistic missile defense system. SM-3 is designed to intercept an incoming ballistic missile outside the earth's atmosphere. Elkton Operations designed, developed, and fabricated the two-pulse third-stage propulsion motor in a multi-year contract with Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), the Navy's prime contractor for the SM-3 program.

In January, the SM-3 completed a successful flight test at the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, Hawaii. The test demonstrated the system's airframe stability and control through a nominal kinetic warhead separation. The flight test included successful operation of the TSRM.

Headquartered in Rocket Center, W. Va., ATK Missile Products Company is one of four operating units within ATK's Aerospace Group. The company's Elkton Operations were previously part of Thiokol Propulsion, which ATK acquired from Alcoa, Inc. in April 2001.

ATK is a $1.6 billion aerospace and defense company with leading positions in munitions, precision capabilities, propulsion, and composite structures. The company, which is headquartered in Hopkins, Minn., employs approximately 10,000 people and has two business segments: Aerospace and Defense.
