BAE SYSTEMS Delivers Advanced Satellite Communications for UK Forces in the Balkans

08 Jan 2001

Ref: 002/001

BAE Systems has delivered the first satellite communications (satcoms) systems to the British Army as part of the programme to enhance communications for troops serving with NATO forces in the Balkans.

Specially equipped Land Rovers are being fitted with rapid deployment satcoms facilities for long-range strategic communications. Each Land Rover contains a fully integrated, stand-alone communications suite, including on-board power generation and a roof-mounted antenna, allowing links to be established between deployed troops and headquarters anywhere in the world within minutes of deployment. Five systems are to be procured from the Communications & Defence Infrastructure division of BAE Systems Avionics Group within a programme managed by the Defence Procurement Agency.

This capability complements BAE Systems' recent success in installing fixed communications systems throughout Bosnia and Kosovo under an Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR) awarded in 2000. It reflects the company’s abilities to successfully integrate commercially sourced hardware and software into fully militarised systems.
Notes to Editors:

Communications & Defence Infrastructure supplies tactical and strategic communications systems, together with information infrastructure, to support battlespace digitization. This typically involves the development of defence applications based on commercial off-the-shelf sub-systems and the transfer of risk from customer organisations. CDI’s approach features creation of Integrated Project Teams with customer representatives and development of industrial alliances with other major industry centres of specialist expertise in relevant fields.
