LOCKHEED MARTIN SPACE SYSTEMS COMPANY ANNOUNCES WORK FORCE REDUCTION
NEW ORLEANS, LA., April 20th, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company – Michoud Operations advised employees today of plans to eliminate approximately 150 positions from its work force within the next year.
The reduction is necessary in order to meet contractual commitments to the Space Shuttle External Tank project; because of delays in the anticipated start of production for X-33 metal liquid hydrogen tanks; and a previously announced consolidation of support services in the Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company.
Positions to be eliminated will come from all areas of the organization. Outplacement services will be available to assist those affected in finding new employment.
Michoud Operations currently employs 2,588 at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Lockheed Martin has designed and built Space Shuttle External Tanks for NASA since 1973. The company is under contract to produce a total of 120 flight tanks and has delivered 104 to date. NASA and Lockheed Martin currently are completing negotiations for additional External Tank production through the year 2006.
Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company – Michoud Operations designs and assembles large aluminum and composite structures for aerospace and other applications, including the Space Shuttle External Tank and the X-33 Reusable Launch Vehicle Technology Demonstrator program.
