MEADS International Receives Marching Orders To Develop MEADS

ORLANDO, FL, June 4th, 1999 -- MEADS International and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control representatives met with NATO MEADS Management Authority (NAMEADSMA) officials in Huntsville, Ala. May 27-28 to discuss the next steps in technology development and risk reduction efforts in support of the Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS).

On May 19, NAMEADSMA announced its selection of MEADS International to spearhead the approximately $300 million, 3-year effort which will begin in January 2000. "The purpose of going to Huntsville was to talk with our customer, NAMEADSMA, about what comes next," said Dave Johnson, executive vice president of MEADS International. What?s next, according to Johnson, is a formal debrief by NAMEADSMA to members of MEADS International on June 7 in Huntsville. Once the contract is signed, MEADS International will outline and define the company's plans for a 6-month transition phase (June through December) and begin full program development in January. Johnson says the U.S. and European partners will work hard to ensure each country shares in the high-technology work or "noble work share."

"Lockheed Martin is proud to be a member of the MEADS International team, with DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG and Alenia Marconi Systems SpA, and we?re ready to get started" said Don Lionetti, vice president of air & missile defense systems at Lockheed Martin MIssles and Fire Control. "We will develop a superior systems solution to protect maneuver forces and critical installations against an increasing air and missile threat, Lionetti continued."

Managed from its headquarters in Orlando, Florida, MEADS International combines the talents of several Lockheed Martin companies led by Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in Orlando with the talents of Alenia Marconi Systems SpA in Rome, Italy, and DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG in Munich, Germany.
