OR&SS Part of International Team To Develop MEADS Air Defense system
SYRACUSE, NY, May 26th, 1999 -- Lockheed Martin Ocean, Radar & Sensor Systems (OR&SS) will lead efforts in sensor development as part of a winning team for the Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS) to be supplied to NATO. The first phase of the MEADS program is a three-year technology development effort valued at approximately $300 million. The program award was announced late last week.
OR&SS is part of a Lockheed Martin team that was recently selected over Raytheon to partner with Alenia Marconi Systems of Italy and DaimlerChrysler Aerospace of Germany to develop the MEADS system. The OR&SS capture team was led by Paul Goulette.
MEADS International Inc., a joint venture comprised of the three partner companies, is the prime contractor for the program. Lockheed Martin Electronics & Missiles in Orlando, Fla., is the lead for the Lockheed Martin team.
"OR&SS is pleased to be the supplier of the search radar and the processor technology for both the search and fire control systems," said Mike Smith, OR&SS president. "This win is important for us. It represents a key element of the future air defense strategy for the U.S., Germany and Italy. Our team put in a tremendous effort and the win validates our vision and our technology."
The three-country partnership will focus on strategically transportable/tactically mobile equipment, including a lightweight launcher; a 360-degree fire control radar; and battle management, command, control and communications. The system will also employ the flight-proven PAC-3 missile, under development separately by Lockheed Martin Vought Systems of Dallas, Texas.
Headquartered in Syracuse, N.Y., OR&SS is Lockheed Martin Corporation's developer of ground-based and airborne radar and ocean systems.
