137th Space Warning Squadron [137th SWS]

The 137th Space Warning Squadron, Greeley, CO, is a Colorado National Guard asset that provides mobile DSP missile warning and reporting.

The 137th SWS activated on October 1, 1995. It assumed the mission of the 4th SWS, Holloman Air Force Base, NM. The 137th SWS reports to the 21st Space Wing, Air Force Space Command, Peterson AFB, CO.

The mission of the 137th SWS is to provide immediate, worldwide missile warning, space launch and detection in the event of an attack against the United States. The unit employs the Air Force's only survivable, mobile satellite communications ground system to pull early warning data from Defense Support Program satellites.

The 137th SWS originally activated on October 1, 1983, as the 1025th Satellite Communications Squadron. The unit spent its first three years testing the new mobile satellite communications equipment and training its people.

On November 1, 1985, administrative responsibility for unit operations was transferred to the 1st Space Wing, AFSPC. The 1025th Space Communications Squadron was redesignated as the 4th Satellite Communcations Squadron on August 1, 1986. Throughout the development and testing phase, the unit was administered by the Plans directorate of AFSPC.

During an Air Force wide reorganization, the 1st Space Wing and the 3rd Space Wing were inactivated, and their assets merged into the 21st Space Wing, Peterson AFB, CO. The unit was renamed the 4th Space Communications Squadron.

On October 1, 1992, the 4th SCS's mission was declassified, and became the 137th Space Warning Squadron.

The 137th SWS:

  • Employs the Air Force's only survivable, mobile satellite communications ground system; and
  • Provides immediate, worldwide missile warning, space launch and detection.

The 137th SWS has about 48 military, 120 air technicians, 123 traditional guard members and five civilian employees.
