Cyber Rapid Response Team assisted in keeping Lithuania's cyberspace safe over the European Parliament election

On June 9, the election to the European Parliament day, the National Cyber Security Centre (Lith. NKSC) under the Ministry of National Defence recorded no cyber-incidents linked to the election. The EU Cyber Rapid Response Team (CRRT) provided assistance to the NKSC over the election period in keeping Lithuania's cyberspace safe.

Seven CRRT experts deployed to Lithuania for the mission from five European Union members states: Belgium, Croatia, Estonia, Netherlands and Poland. Throughout the lection period they conducted cyber-threat monitoring, analyzed infrastructure vulnerabilities and maintained readiness to respond to potential cyber incidents in cooperation with the NKSC team.

"Activation and deployment of CRRT experts to Lithuania in support of ensuring European Parliament elections security is an example of a successful cooperation of EU member states in the area of cyber security, which sends a signal to hostile cyber-criminal groups to biter not test neither Lithuania's nor the EU's resilience to cyber-threats," Vice Minister Greta Monika Tučkutė said.

The CRRT mission also put to test time the information exchange and interaction mechanism by for the first sharing cyber-threat assessment reports provided by the Cyber Threat Analysis Cell of the Regional Cyber Defence Centre, part of the NKSC.

The EU Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) Cyber Rapid Response Teams and Mutual Assistance in Cyber Security (CRRTs) project initiated by Lithuania in 2018 is one of the most successful among the 60 PESCO projects. It is designed to prevent cyber-attacks and respond to cyber-incidents in EU member states, European institutions, European Common Security and Defence Policy missions and operations and provide assistance to partners.

The CRRT currently has 11 EU countries as members: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Slovenia.
