Taipei, July 11 (CNA) The COVID-19 situation in Taiwan passed its peak over the past week, as the daily average of confirmed serious and moderate COVID cases fell 8.2 percent from a week earlier to 190, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday.
According to data compiled by the CDC, there have been 14,502 serious and moderate COVID-19 cases since May 1. Of those patients, 5,089 have not been vaccinated against the disease, and another 2,124 had only received one or two shots of the vaccine.
Of the COVID-19 cases recorded over the past four weeks, 87 percent involved the Omicron subvariant XBB, which is now the dominant strain domestically and worldwide, where about 78 percent of all cases are XBB infections, the CDC said.
Meanwhile, an average of 33 people per day died of COVID or COVID-related complications from July 2 to July 8, compared to 45 a day from a week earlier, according to the CDC.
Of the fatalities recorded during the week, 89 percent of the deceased had chronic illnesses, 57 percent received less than three shots of vaccines, and 95 percent were 60 or older.
According to data compiled by the CDC, the weekly number of deaths from COVID-19 has fluctuated over the past seven weeks, jumping from 139 in late May to 193 in early June, before dropping slightly over the Dragon Boat Festival long weekend from June 22 to 25 to 167.
The number soared in the week following the Dragon Boat Festival to 318 before dropping back down to 233 in the period from July 2-July 8.
According to CDC Deputy Director-General Tseng Shu-hui (曾淑惠), the daily number of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths are expected to drop further over the next two to three months.
A statement by the CDC agreed, saying that the trends recorded over the past several weeks indicated that the most recent domestic COVID-19 wave had passed its most critical stage.
A total of 6,085 people have died of COVID-19 in Taiwan so far in 2023, compared to 14,667 people dying of the disease in all of 2022, according to CDC data.
