
Iran's daily COVID deaths surge to 42, authorities issue red alert

Tehran, IRNA -- Iranian authorities have urged people to observe health protocols as daily deaths caused by COVID-19 have reached a red alert level of 42, the higehst since the start of the current calendar year in late March.
Deputy health minister Saeed Karimi said on Monday that a new variant of coronavirus, known as XBB.1/5, had caused a surge in the number of infections in Iran.
Karimi said that number of COVID-19 infection had increased significantly in 18 cities in Iran, prompting authorities to issue a red alert.
Hossein Farshidi, another official of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, told IRNA on Monday that people who have received COVID-19 vaccines more than six months ago are recommended to once again visit vaccination centers.
