Taipei, March 9 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported 9,584 new cases of COVID-19 and 49 deaths from the disease on Thursday.

Among the new infections, 9,403 were domestic, which represented a 20.6-percent drop from the same day a week earlier, according to the CECC.

Domestic cases during the seven days between Feb. 26 and March 4 totaled 78,404, representing a drop of 20.5 percent compared with the preceding week's total of 98,612, Deputy Minister of Health and Welfare Victor Wang (王必勝) said, citing the CECC data.

Wang added that the number of weekly domestic cases had declined steadily for five consecutive weeks from Jan. 29.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 10,143,788 COVID-19 infections and 18,371 deaths from the disease since the pandemic began in early 2020.

The CECC announced on Feb. 23 that it would stop releasing more detailed daily information on new COVID-19 cases and deaths.
