Taiwan reports 12,657 new COVID-19 cases, 54 deaths

Taipei, Feb. 13 (CNA) Taiwan reported 12,657 new cases of COVID-19 and 54 deaths from the disease on Monday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The 12,397 domestic cases represented a nearly 25 percent decline from the same day the previous week, the CECC said.

The CECC said that all of the deaths reported Monday bar three involved individuals with underlying health conditions, while 26 of those who died were unvaccinated against COVID-19.

The youngest death was a 10-month-old boy with congenital gastrointestinal issues who died from multiple organ failure caused by COVID-19, according to the CECC.

Also on Monday, the CECC reported 68 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 38 as severe, including a 4-month-old boy who developed multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

The CECC said the boy had been discharged from hospital after responding positively to the treatment.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases with 2,365, followed by Kaohsiung with 1,526 and Taoyuan with 1,517.

Taichung reported 1,497 cases, Taipei 1,024, Tainan 1,004, Changhua 630, Hsinchu County 404, Pingtung 339, Miaoli 289, Keelung 257, Hsinchu City 252, Yunlin 243, and Yilan 231.

Nantou had 209 cases, Hualien 180, Chiayi County 148, Chiayi City 106, Taitung 69, Penghu 55, Kinmen 46, and the Matsu Islands six.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,821,755 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 52,174 classified as imported.

With the 54 deaths reported on Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 17,157.
