
Taiwan reports 24,240 new COVID-19 cases, 54 deaths

Taipei, Feb. 8 (CNA) Taiwan on Wednesday reported 24,240 new cases of COVID-19 and 54 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The new cases represented a 24.2-percent drop from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.
The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but four had underlying health conditions, while 38 of them had not received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, the CECC said.
Meanwhile, the CECC said six of the 901 travelers (0.7 percent) arriving directly from China on Feb. 6 tested positive for the disease, while all 142 of the people who traveled from Xiamen in China to Kinmen or Matsu tested negative.
Also on Wednesday, the CECC reported 124 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 53 as severe.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 4,619, followed by Taichung with 2,879 and Kaohsiung with 2,841.
Taoyuan reported 2,739 new cases, Taipei 2,243, Tainan 1,890, Changhua 1,126, Hsinchu County 754, Pingtung 675, Hsinchu City 598, Miaoli 569, and Keelung 510.
Yilan had 502 cases, Yunlin 478, Nantou 410, Hualien 297, Chiayi County 292, Chiayi City 203, Taitung 136, Kinmen 63, Penghu 60 and the Matsu Islands nine, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,733,094 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 50,876 classified as imported.
With the 54 deaths reported on Wednesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 16,849.
