
Taiwan reports 16,640 new COVID-19 cases, 63 deaths

Taipei, Feb. 6 (CNA) Taiwan on Monday reported 16,640 new cases of COVID-19 and 63 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The new cases represented a 26-percent drop from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.
The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All but six had underlying health issues, while 33 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Meanwhile, the CECC said 12 of the 936 travelers (1.3 percent) arriving directly from China on Feb. 4 tested positive for the disease, as did four of the 254 people (1.6 percent) who traveled from Xiamen in China to Kinmen or Matsu.
Also on Monday, the CECC reported 151 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 73 as severe.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 3,136, followed by Taoyuan with 2,125 and Kaohsiung with 1,990.
Taichung reported 1,921 new cases, Taipei 1,333, Tainan 1,242, Changhua 838, Hsinchu County 566, Miaoli 486, Pingtung 428, Hsinchu City 414, and Keelung 314.
Nantou had 291 cases, Yunlin 291, Yilan 275, Chiayi County 210, Hualien 200, Chiayi City 128, Taitung 79, Kinmen 65, Penghu 53 and the Matsu Islands six, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,685,484 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 50,268 classified as imported.
With the 63 deaths reported on Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 16,750.
