
Taiwan reports 27,085 new COVID-19 cases, 74 deaths

Taipei, Feb. 2 (CNA) Taiwan reported 27,085 new COVID-19 cases and 74 deaths from the disease Thursday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 60s to their 90s. All but three had underlying health issues, while 43 were unvaccinated against the disease, the CECC said.
Meanwhile, the CECC said 14 of the 845 travelers (1.7 percent) arriving directly from China on Jan. 31 tested positive for the disease, as did one out of the 118 people (0.8 percent) who traveled from Xiamen in China to Kinmen or Matsu.
Of the travelers who arrived in Taiwan from China in January, 48,072 (8.7 percent) tested positive for COVID-19, according to CECC data.
Also on Thursday, the CECC reported 309 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 74 as severe.
One of the severe cases involves a 1-year-old boy who contracted multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).
The boy, who had no preexisting conditions and received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, is currently in stable condition in a general ward following treatment, the CECC said.
Another of the severe cases involves a 3-year-old boy with croup, who the CECC said was discharged from hospital on Feb. 1 after responding positively to treatment.
So far, Taiwan has reported 307 severe cases of COVID-19 involving children aged 12 and under. Of these, 202 developed MIS-C, and 12 croup, the CECC data showed.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 5,102, followed by Kaohsiung with 3,284 and Taichung with 3,177.
Taoyuan reported 3,001 new cases, Taipei 2,409, Tainan 2,224, Changhua 1,331, Hsinchu County 814, Miaoli 680, Pingtung 655, Yunlin 581 and Hsinchu City 578.
Yilan had 549 cases, Keelung 541, Hualien 448, Nantou 408, Chiayi County 388, Chiayi City 235, Taitung 185, Kinmen 116, Penghu 74 and the Matsu Islands 13, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,596,660 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 49,056 classified as imported.
With the 74 deaths reported on Thursday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 16,430.
