Taiwan reports 31,801 new COVID-19 cases, 48 deaths

Taipei, Feb. 1 (CNA) Taiwan on Wednesday reported 31,801 new COVID-19 cases and 48 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new cases represented a 92.9-percent increase over the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but seven had underlying health issues, while 30 had not received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, the CECC said.

Meanwhile, the CECC said 14 of the 985 travelers (1.4 percent) arriving directly from China on Jan. 30 tested positive for the disease, while all of the 74 people who traveled from Xiamen in China to Kinmen or Matsu tested negative.

Also on Wednesday, the CECC reported 160 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 48 as severe.

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 6,097, followed by Taichung with 3,950 and Taoyuan with 3,864.

Kaohsiung reported 3,560 new cases, Taipei 2,843, Tainan 2,495, Changhua 1,380, Hsinchu County 1,048, Miaoli 824, Hsinchu City 820, Pingtung 816 and Yunlin 663.

Keelung had 627 cases, Yilan 566, Nantou 447, Chiayi County 417, Hualien 412, Chiayi City 263, Taitung 232, Kinmen 97, Penghu 75 and the Matsu Islands five, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,569,611 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 48,823 classified as imported.

With the 48 deaths reported on Wednesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 16,356.
