Taipei, Jan. 30 (CNA) Taiwan on Monday reported 22,291 new cases of COVID-19 and 30 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The 22,138 new domestic cases represented a 110.8-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, the CECC said.

The CECC said it would take several more days to assess whether the sharp rise indicated a new trend, however, as many medical institutions were closed during the Lunar New Year break from Jan. 20 to Jan. 29, leading to fewer reported cases.

The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s, the CECC said.

The number of people arriving from China who tested positive for COVID-19 remained low, according to CECC data.

Of the 976 travelers who arrived in Taiwan directly from China, 21, or 2.2 percent, tested positive for the disease, while none of the 87 people who traveled from Xiamen in China to Kinmen or Matsu did so.

Also on Monday, the CECC reported 59 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 18 as severe.

There was one new young (12 and under) severe case involving multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) from Jan. 20 to 29, the CECC said.

The CECC said the 5-year-old girl, who has since been discharged from the hospital after responding positively to treatment, was the 201st MIS-C case and the 305th severe case among children under 12, and 43 of them have died.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 4,109, followed by Taoyuan with 2,799 and Taichung with 2,772.

Kaohsiung reported 2,492 new cases, Taipei 1,936, Tainan 1,601, Changhua 1,033, Hsinchu County 873, Miaoli 603, Hsinchu City 546, Pingtung 537 and Keelung 482.

Yunlin had 452 cases, Nantou 377, Yilan 376, Hualien 294, Chiayi County 291, Chiayi City 193, Taitung 158, Kinmen 126, Penghu 82 and the Matsu Islands six, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,505,551 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 48,398 classified as imported.

With the 30 deaths reported on Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 16,276.
