Taiwan reports 21,078 new COVID-19 cases, 33 deaths

Taipei, Jan. 21 (CNA) Taiwan reported 21,078 new cases of COVID-19 and 33 deaths from the disease on Saturday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The total number of cases represented a 3.1-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, the CECC said. Cases are compared on a week-to-week basis because of variations in reporting on specific days of the week.

The deceased reported Saturday ranged in age from their 40s to 90s. All had underlying health issues, while 23 of them were not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (three doses), the CECC said.

Also on Saturday, the CECC reported 92 new cases classified as moderate and 31 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases with 4,405, followed by Kaohsiung with 2,442 new cases and Taoyuan with 2,416.

Taichung reported 2,391 new cases, Taipei 2,207, Tainan 1,709, Changhua 926, Hsinchu County 570, Miaoli 550, Hsinchu City 419, Pingtung 419, Yunlin 404, Keelung 365 and Yilan 337.

Nantou had 286 new cases, Chiayi County 236, Hualien 209, Chiayi City 186, Kinmen 120, Taitung 112, Penghu 55 and the Matsu Islands nine, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,323,771 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 46,797 classified as imported.

With the 33 deaths reported on Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 16,071.
