Taiwan reports 15,632 COVID-19 cases, 40 deaths

Taipei, Jan. 16 (CNA) Taiwan on Monday reported 15,632 new cases of COVID-19 and 40 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The total number of cases represented a 9-percent decline from the same day a week earlier, the CECC said. For the seven-day period from Jan. 10 to Jan. 16, total cases were down 16.7 percent from the previous seven-day period, but deaths were up 2.8 percent.

The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All but two had underlying health issues, while 22 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Also on Monday, the CECC reported 19 new cases classified as moderate and 33 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases, with 3,163, followed by Taichung with 1,987 and Taoyuan with 1,878.

Kaohsiung reported 1,724 new cases, Taipei 1,575, Tainan 1,231, Changhua 625, Hsinchu County 544, Hsinchu City 406, Miaoli 371, Pingtung 325 and Yunlin 280.

Nantou had 254 cases, Keelung 241, Yilan 198, Chiayi County 184, Hualien 132, Chiayi City 119, Taitung 71, Kinmen 54, Penghu 38 and the Matsu Islands nine, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,225,106 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 45,303 classified as imported.

With the 40 deaths reported on Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 15,873.
