Taiwan reports 21,270 new COVID-19 cases, 31 deaths

Taipei, Jan. 15 (CNA) Taiwan on Sunday reported 21,270 new cases of COVID-19 and 31 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The total number of cases represented a 9.1-percent decline from the same day a week earlier, the CECC said.
The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All but three had underlying health issues, while 16 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Also on Sunday, the CECC reported 101 new cases classified as moderate and 28 as severe.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases, with 4,242, followed by Taichung with 2,654 and Kaohsiung with 2,559.
Taoyuan reported 2,314 new cases, Taipei 2,279, Tainan 1,618, Changhua 876, Hsinchu County 630, Hsinchu City 557, Miaoli 515, Pingtung 475 and Yunlin 413.
Keelung had 371 cases, Yilan 315, Nantou 273, Chiayi County 269, Chiayi City 186, Hualien 166, Taitung 125, Kinmen 83, Penghu 40 and the Matsu Islands 12, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,209,474 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 45,086 classified as imported.
With the 31 deaths reported on Sunday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 15,833.
