Taiwan reports 23,411 new COVID-19 cases, 36 deaths

Taipei, Jan. 8 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported 23,411 new COVID-19 infections Sunday -- all but 331 domestic cases -- and 36 deaths from the disease.

The new cases represented an 8.7-percent decline from the same day a week earlier, according to CECC data.

The deceased reported on Sunday ranged in age from their 30s to their 90s. All had underlying health conditions, while 20 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said in a press release that day.

Also on Sunday, the CECC reported 139 new cases classified as moderate and 41 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 4,590, followed by Taichung with 2,923 and Kaohsiung with 2,613, according to the CECC.

Taipei reported 2,509 new cases, Taoyuan 2,333, Tainan 2,016, Changhua County 1,033, Hsinchu County 757, Hsinchu City 644, Miaoli County 572, and Pingtung County 558.

Yunlin County had 459 new cases, Chiayi County 377, Keelung City 364, Yilan County 340, Nantou County 294, Chiayi City 216, Hualien County 183, Taitung County 130, Kinmen County 102, Penghu County 55, and the Matsu Islands 12, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,055,191 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 42,618 classified as imported.

With the 36 deaths reported on Sunday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 15,542.
