
Taiwan reports 24,422 new COVID-19 cases, 61 deaths

Taipei, Jan. 7 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported 24,422 new COVID-19 infections Saturday -- all but 290 domestic cases -- and 61 deaths from the disease.
The new cases represented a 1.05-percent increase from the same day a week earlier but were lower than the recent high of 33,871 reported on Wednesday, according to CECC data.
The deceased reported on Saturday ranged in age from their 30s to their 90s. All but six had underlying health conditions, with 26 unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said in a press release that day.
Also on Saturday, the CECC reported 128 new cases classified as moderate and 58 as severe.
Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 4,875, followed by Taichung with 3,139 and Kaohsiung with 2,718, according to the CECC.
Taipei reported 2,683 new cases, Taoyuan 2,596, Tainan 1,961, Changhua County 1,082, Hsinchu County 781, Hsinchu City 656, Miaoli County 533 and Pingtung County 523.
Yunlin County had 456 new cases, Keelung City 382, Chiayi County 377, Yilan County 338, Nantou County 338, Chiayi City 225, Hualien County 160 and Taitung County 133.
In Taiwan's outlying counties, Kinmen recorded 98 new infections, Penghu 70 and the Matsu Islands eight, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,031,781 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 42,312 classified as imported.
With the 61 deaths reported on Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 15,506.
