Taiwan reports 33,871 new COVID-19 cases, 17 deaths

Taipei, Jan. 4 (CNA) Taiwan on Wednesday reported 33,871 new COVID-19 infections and 17 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new cases represented a 19.3-percent increase over the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but one had underlying health conditions, while eight of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Also on Wednesday, the CECC reported 18 new cases classified as moderate and 15 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 6,621, followed by Taichung with 4,381 and Taipei with 3,763.

Kaohsiung reported 3,613 new cases, Taoyuan 3,476, Tainan 2,915, Changhua 1,445, Hsinchu County 1,138, Hsinchu City 939, Miaoli 843, Pingtung 694 and Yunlin 628.

Chiayi County had 499 cases, Nantou 497, Keelung 461, Yilan 443, Chiayi City 324, Hualien 230, Taitung 173, Kinmen 137, Penghu 93 and the Matsu Islands 17, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,948,201 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 41,266 classified as imported.

With the 17 deaths reported on Wednesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 15,338.
