Taipei, Jan. 3 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command (CECC) reported 25,009 new COVID-19 infections and 22 deaths from the disease Tuesday.
The new cases represented a 0.9-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.
Case numbers are compared on a week-on-week basis because of variations in reported numbers depending on the day of the week.

Moderate and severe cases
Also on Tuesday, the CECC reported 12 new cases classified as moderate and 15 as severe, including one case of pneumonia and two cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).
The CECC said the pneumonia case involved a 10-year-old girl who had gotten one vaccine jab and had a nervous system disease. She has improved after being treated but she remains under observation in intensive care.
The two MIS-C cases involved a 4-year-old unvaccinated boy and a 1-year-old child who had gotten two vaccine jabs, neither of whom had previous health issues, the CECC said.
Both of them were discharged from hospitals after responding positively to treatment, the CECC said.
Among the 293 severe cases of COVID-19 involving children 12 or under, 194 children developed MIS-C and 31 developed pneumonia, and 40 have died.
