Taiwan reports 16,602 new COVID-19 cases, 26 deaths

Taipei, Jan. 2 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command (CECC) reported 16,602 new COVID-19 infections and 26 deaths from the disease Monday.

The new cases represented a 16.7-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

Case numbers are compared on a week-to-week basis because of variances in reported numbers depending on the day of the week.

The deceased reported on Monday included one 8-year-old boy who had received two vaccine jabs and 25 adults ranging in age from their 60s to their 90s. All but four (including the boy) had underlying health conditions, while 12 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Also on Monday, the CECC reported 11 new cases classified as moderate and 22 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases with 3,377, followed by Taichung with 2,078 and Taoyuan with 1,821.

Kaohsiung reported 1,751 new cases, Taipei 1,655, Tainan 1,337, Changhua 825, Hsinchu County 629, Hsinchu City 472, Miaoli 433 and Pingtung 350.

Yunlin had 297 cases, Keelung 286, Chiayi County 260, Nantou 240, Yilan 213, Chiayi City 161, Hualien 120, Taitung 102, Kinmen 72, Penghu 38 and the Matsu Islands seven, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,889,346 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 40,378 classified as imported.

With the 26 deaths reported on Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 15,299.
