
Taiwan reports 25,755 new COVID-19 cases, 38 deaths

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command (CECC) reported 25,755 new COVID-19 infections and 38 deaths from the disease Saturday.
The new cases represented a 43-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.
Case numbers are compared on a week-on-week basis because of variances in reported numbers depending on the day of the week.
The deceased reported on Saturday ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but three had underlying health conditions, while 18 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Also on Saturday, the CECC reported 55 new cases classified as moderate and 38 as severe.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 5,405, followed by Taichung with 3,212 and Taipei with 2,981.
Taoyuan reported 2,833 new cases, Kaohsiung 2,442, Tainan 2,026, Changhua 1,260, Hsinchu County 923, Hsinchu City 779, Miaoli 679 and Yunlin 446.
Pingtung had 455 cases, Nantou 383, Keelung 375, Chiayi County 371, Yilan 345, Chiayi City 233, Hualien 206, Kinmen 120, Taitung 103, Penghu 69 and the Matsu Islands eight, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,847,360 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 40,201 classified as imported.
With the 38 deaths reported on Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 15,253.
