Taiwan reports 27,413 new COVID-19 cases, 34 deaths

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command (CECC) reported 27,413 new COVID-19 infections and 36 deaths from the disease Friday.

The new cases represented a 43.7-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

The 158,063 cases recorded from Dec. 24 to 30 represented a 35.8 percent week-over-week increase compared with those reported from Dec. 17 to 23.

Meanwhile, the 176 COVID-19 deaths reported between Dec. 24 to 30 represented a 19.6-percent week-over-week drop, according to the CECC.

The deceased reported on Friday included a 2-year-old girl who was unvaccinated against COVID-19 and had been on a ventilator due to multiple chronic diseases, including a neurological disorder.

The other deaths reported Friday involved individuals ranging in age from their 40s to their 90s, all but one of whom had underlying health conditions and 14 who were unvaccinated.

Also on Friday, the CECC reported 94 new cases classified as moderate and 42 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 5,435, followed by Taichung with 3,636 and Taipei with 3,101.

Taoyuan reported 3,063 new cases, Kaohsiung 2,660, Tainan 2,223, Changhua 1,298, Hsinchu County 995, Hsinchu City 871, Miaoli 701, and Yunlin 535.

Pingtung had 528 cases, Keelung 368, Nanou 368, Chiayi County 352, Yilan 299, Hualien 237, Chiayi City 232, Taitung 136, Kinmen 111, Penghu 65 and the Matsu Islands 6, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,821,620 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 40,134 classified as imported.

With the 34 deaths reported on Friday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 15,215.
