
Taiwan reports 27,955 new COVID-19 cases, 36 deaths

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) Taiwan on Thursday reported 27,955 new COVID-19 infections and 36 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The new cases represented a 40.4-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.
On a week-by-week basis, the 141,659 cases recorded from Dec. 22 to 28 were up by 30.1 percent from the number reported from Dec. 15 to 21, the data showed.
Meanwhile, the 187 COVID-19 deaths from Dec. 22 to 28 were a 6-percent drop from the total recorded in the previous seven-day period, according to the CECC.
The deceased reported on Thursday included a woman in her 20s, who suffered from severe cirrhosis and other conditions, while the others ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s.
All had underlying health conditions, while 15 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Also on Thursday, the CECC reported 120 new cases classified as moderate and 37 as severe.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 5,665, followed by Taichung with 3,602 and Taipei with 3,195.
Taoyuan reported 3,144 new cases, Kaohsiung 2,747, Tainan 2,232, Changhua 1,211, Hsinchu County 984, Hsinchu City 947, Miaoli 699 and Yunlin 539.
Pingtung had 437 cases, Nantou 435, Keelung 418, Chiayi County 377, Yilan 361, Chiayi City 279, Hualien 215, Kinmen 131, Taitung 127, Penghu 47 and the Matsu Islands 11, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,794,212 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 39,944 classified as imported.
With the 36 deaths reported on Thursday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 15,181.
