Taiwan reports 18,066 new COVID-19 cases, 36 deaths

Taipei, Dec. 24 (CNA) Taiwan on Saturday reported 18,066 new COVID-19 infections and 36 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new cases represented a 16.1-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

The deceased reported on Saturday ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but four had underlying health conditions, while 17 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Meanwhile, the CECC reported 63 new cases classified as moderate and 39 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 3,533, followed by Taichung with 2,240 and Taoyuan with 2,062.

Taipei reported 1,994 new cases, Kaohsiung 1,852, Tainan 1,420, Changhua 870, Hsinchu County 635, Hsinchu City 560, Miaoli 427, Pingtung 397 and Yunlin 316.

Nantou had 303 cases, Yilan 281, Chiayi County 265, Keelung 243, Hualien 172, Chiayi City 159, Kinmen 93, Taitung 82, Penghu 44 and the Matsu Islands one, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,681,672 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 39,364 classified as imported.

With the 36 deaths reported on Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 15,075.
