
Taiwan reports 19,155 new COVID-19 cases, 27 deaths

Taipei, Dec. 21 (CNA) Taiwan on Wednesday reported 19,155 new COVID-19 infections and 27 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The new cases represented an 8.6-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.
Earlier on Wednesday, CECC chief Victor Wang (王必勝) said COVID-19 infections in Taiwan were slowly rising again, and would likely peak at over 20,000 cases per day in late January or early February of next year.
The deceased reported on Wednesday ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but two had underlying health conditions, while 15 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Of the 14,076 deaths from locally transmitted COVID-19 infections in Taiwan this year, 91 percent were people with chronic illnesses or other conditions, 91 percent were aged 60 or above, and 66 percent had not received three shots of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to CECC data as of Dec. 20.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 3,807, followed by Taichung with 2,362 and Taoyuan with 2,261.
Taipei reported 2,173 new cases, Kaohsiung 1,991, Tainan 1,350, Changhua 930, Hsinchu County 748, Hsinchu City 552, Pingtung 429, Miaoli 426 and Yunlin 349.
Chiayi County had 279 cases, Yilan 267, Keelung 243, Nantou 240, Chiayi City 187, Hualien 184, Taitung 121, Kinmen 90 and Penghu 62, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,624,680 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 39,049 classified as imported.
With the 27 deaths reported on Wednesday, the number of confirmed fatalities in the country rose to 14,958.
