Taiwan reports 17,131 new COVID-19 cases, 18 deaths

Taipei, Dec. 20 (CNA) Taiwan on Tuesday reported 17,131 new COVID-19 infections and 18 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new cases represented a 0.2-percent drop from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

On a week-by-week basis, the 107,440 cases recorded from Dec. 13 to Dec. 19 were up by 5.71 percent from the number reported from Dec. 6 to Dec. 12, the data showed.

Meanwhile, the 203 COVID-19 deaths from Dec. 13 to Dec. 19 were a 3.3-percent decrease from the total recorded during the previous seven-day period, according to the CECC.

The deceased reported on Tuesday ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All had underlying health conditions, while 11 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Also on Tuesday, the CECC reported 15 new cases classified as moderate and 16 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 3,254, followed by Taichung with 2,175 and Kaohsiung with 1,993.

Taoyuan reported 1,801 new cases, Taipei 1,749, Tainan 1,369, Changhua 877, Hsinchu County 587, Hsinchu City 503, Miaoli 444, Pingtung 422 and Yunlin 388.

Chiayi County had 256 cases, Yilan 249, Nantou 242, Chiayi City 167, Keelung 166, Hualien 166, Taitung 121, Kinmen 98, Penghu 52 and the Matsu Islands one, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,605,539 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 38,949 classified as imported.

With the 18 deaths reported on Tuesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 14,931.
