Taiwan reports 15,625 new COVID-19 cases, 40 deaths

Taipei, Dec. 17 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported 15,625 new COVID-19 infections on Saturday, all but 161 of which were domestic cases, as well as 40 deaths from the disease.

The new cases represented a 8.7-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

The deceased reported on Saturday ranged in age from their 30s to their 90s, while 36 had underlying health conditions, the CECC said in a statement.

In addition, 21 of them had not received any COVID-19 vaccine doses, according to the CECC.

Also on Saturday, the CECC reported 82 new cases classified as moderate and 46 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 3,037, followed by Taichung with 1,947 and Taoyuan with 1,768.

Kaohsiung reported 1,766 new cases, Taipei 1,566, Tainan 1,194, Changhua County 740, Hsinchu County 481, Hsinchu City 456, Pingtung County 396, Miaoli County 379 and Yunlin County 353.

Chiayi County had 232 cases, Yilan County 223, Nantou County 219, Keelung City 182, Chiayi City 159, Hualien County 143, Taitung County 93, Kinmen County 87 and Penghu County 39, while the Matsu Islands had four cases, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,562,931 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 38,778 classified as imported.

With the 40 deaths reported on Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 14,860.
