Taiwan reports 17,663 new COVID-19 cases, 37 deaths

Taipei, Dec. 14 (CNA) Taiwan on Wednesday reported 17,663 new COVID-19 infections and 37 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new cases represented a 5.1-percent increase from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

The deceased included one man in his 20s, who had been hospitalized since June with a blood disease, while the others ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s.

All but two had underlying health conditions, and 19 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Also on Wednesday, the CECC reported 29 new cases classified as severe and 80 as moderate.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases, with 3,195, followed by Taichung with 2,236 and Taoyuan with 2,008.

Kaohsiung reported 2,001 new cases, Taipei 1,774, Tainan 1,361, Changhua 845, Hsinchu County 644, Hsinchu City 531, Pingtung 493, Miaoli 457 and Yunlin 353.

Chiayi County had 282 cases, Nantou 261, Hualien 231, Keelung 221, Yilan 212, Chiayi City 202, Taitung 107, Kinmen 94, Penghu 40 and the Matsu Islands one, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,515,833 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 38,466 classified as imported.

With the 37 deaths reported on Wednesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 14,759.
