
Taiwan reports 17,168 new COVID-19 cases, 12 deaths

Taipei, Dec. 13 (CNA) Taiwan on Tuesday reported 17,168 new COVID-19 infections and 12 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The new number of cases represented a 7-percent drop from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.
On a week-by-week basis, the 101,638 cases recorded from Dec. 6 to Dec. 12 were up 0.47 percent from the number reported from Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, the data showed.
Meanwhile, the 210 COVID-19 deaths from Dec. 6 to Dec. 12 marked a 6.25-percent decrease from the total recorded during the previous seven-day period, according to the CECC.
The deceased reported Tuesday ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All had underlying health conditions, while five of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Of the 13,855 deaths from locally transmitted COVID-19 infections in Taiwan this year, 91 percent were people with chronic illnesses or other underlying conditions, 91 percent were aged 60 or above, and 66 percent had not received three shots of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to CECC data as of Dec. 12.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases, with 2,750, followed by Taichung with 2,235 and Kaohsiung with 2,107.
Taoyuan recorded 1,705 new cases, Taipei 1,660, Tainan 1,542, Changhua 1,026, Pingtung 531, Hsinchu County 511, Hsinchu City 489, Miaoli 468 amd Yunlin 408.
Nantou had 294 cases, Chiayi County 293, Yilan 274, Hualien 233, Chiayi City 187, Keelung 144, Kinmen 110, Taitung 99, Penghu 49, and the Matsu Islands three, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,498,195 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 38,354 classified as imported.
With the 12 deaths reported on Tuesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 14,722.
