Taiwan reports 16,741 new COVID-19 cases, 26 deaths

Taipei, Dec. 7 (CNA) Taiwan reported 16,741 new COVID-19 infections and 26 deaths on Wednesday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new number of cases represented a 5.5-percent drop from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

On a week-by week basis, the 99,908 cases recorded from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6 were down by 2.69 percent from the number reported from Nov. 23 to Nov. 29, the data showed.

Meanwhile, the 225 COVID-19 deaths from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6 marked a 16.04-percent decrease from the total recorded during the previous seven-day period, according to the CECC.

The deceased reported on Wednesday ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All but two had underlying health conditions, while 13 of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Of the 13,667 confirmed COVID-19 deaths in Taiwan this year, 91 percent were patients with chronic illnesses or other underlying conditions, 91 percent were aged 60 or above, and 66 percent had not received three shots of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to CECC data as of Dec. 6.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases with 2,758, followed by Taichung with 2,213 and Kaohsiung with 2,032.

Taoyuan recorded 1,941 new cases, Taipei 1,507, Tainan 1,220, Changhua County 937, Hsinchu County 616, Hsinchu City 559, Pingtung County 526, Miaoli County 447, Yunlin County 340, and Chiayi County 271.

Nantou County had 268 cases, Yilan County 254, Hualien County 216, Keelung 203, Chiayi City 173, Taitung County 95, Kinmen 70, Penghu 43, and the Matsu Islands five, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,412,200 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 38,034 classified as imported.

With the 26 deaths reported on Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 14,548.
